What we do
A sewage backup is classified as Category 3 water, which is the industry term for grossly contaminated. It carries bacteria, viruses, and parasites, and the exposure risk is not theoretical. That classification changes everything about the response, from who is allowed in the room to what can be saved and what cannot. Treating it like a large spill is the mistake that turns a contained event into a household health problem.
The first move is containment and exclusion. We seal the affected area, set negative air under HEPA filtration so contaminated air moves into the containment rather than out of it, and establish a single entry and exit point. People and pets stay out. Crew works in the appropriate protection. If the contamination has traveled into an adjacent room or down through a floor assembly, that path gets contained too, because the water goes where the building sends it.
Who is in the building changes the urgency. Infants, older adults, anyone pregnant, anyone on immunosuppressive treatment, and anyone with an open wound carries a materially different exposure risk from a healthy adult, and the standard advice for those groups is to stay out of the building entirely until the affected area has been cleaned, treated, and dried. That is not caution for its own sake. Category 3 water carries organisms that cause real illness, and the exposure route is not only contact. Aerosolized contamination from a fan, a wet vacuum, or somebody walking through it is the more common one.
Extraction follows immediately, because time and contamination compound each other. Free water comes out with pumps and extraction units dedicated to this work. Solids and debris are taken out and disposed of under the rules that apply to them. Then the affected area gets a first cleaning pass to take the gross contamination off before anything else happens.
Then comes the honest conversation about materials. Porous items that absorbed contaminated water cannot be disinfected back to a safe condition, and that includes carpet pad, most upholstered contents, mattresses, and paper goods. We inventory and document what is affected so you have the record. Where the affected material is part of the building rather than your belongings, taking it out is a separate trade with its own state license, and we tell you so on the first visit.
What stays gets cleaned and then disinfected, in that order. Cleaning takes off the soil that a disinfectant cannot penetrate. Disinfection follows on a clean surface, applied at the dwell time the product actually requires rather than sprayed and wiped. Hard surfaces, framing, and structural components that were in contact with the water without being saturated by it are the ones that come back.
Drying runs after the disinfection, never before it. Blowing air across contaminated material aerosolizes it, which is why fans do not go down in a sewage loss until the area has been cleaned and treated. Once it has, the structure is dried and monitored like any other water loss, with daily readings against a dry standard from an unaffected part of the building.
Flooring is where most sewage decisions get made. Carpet over pad in an affected area does not come back, because the pad absorbs and the backing traps. Sheet vinyl over a wood subfloor holds contaminated water underneath it, so the assembly has to be opened to be treated even where the surface looks unaffected. Sealed concrete and properly grouted tile usually clean and stay. Hardwood is a judgment call that turns on how long the water sat and whether it reached the underside. Odor is the last stage and it is a real one. Sewage odor is the smell of residue that is still present, so it resolves when the source resolves. If a smell survives cleaning and drying, something was missed, usually inside a cavity or under a fixture, and we go find it rather than deodorizing over it.
The most common versions of this call in the Valley are a main line backup, a toilet overflow that ran for hours, a failed ejector pump in a below-grade unit, and a multifamily stack backup that surfaces in the lowest unit. That last one is a property management problem before it is a plumbing problem, because the affected unit is rarely the unit that caused it. In a multifamily building the question of who pays arrives before the question of who cleans, and the two do not have the same answer. The affected unit is frequently not the source, the source is frequently in common plumbing, and the association, the owner, and the resident often hold different parts of the loss. What we can do is document precisely and immediately, which is what everyone in that conversation ends up needing. We take the readings, the photographs, and the category determination, and we hand the same record to whoever asks for it.

Questions people ask
Can I clean up a sewage backup myself?
Cleaning it yourself is the one water category where we would tell you not to. Category 3 water carries bacteria, viruses, and parasites, household cleaning does not reach the dwell times disinfection requires, and moving air across it before it is treated spreads it. Small, fully contained overflows on a sealed hard floor are the exception.
What has to be thrown out?
Porous items that absorbed contaminated water go, because they cannot be disinfected back to a safe condition. That means carpet pad, mattresses, upholstered furniture, and paper goods in the affected area. Hard, non-porous surfaces and structural components that were not saturated usually clean up and stay. We document everything either way.
How long does a sewage cleanup take?
The cleaning and disinfection portion is usually one to two days for a contained residential backup. Drying adds three to five days on top of that, and the total runs longer where water got under cabinetry or into a wall cavity. You get the readings that set the schedule.
Do you work on the line that backed up?
We do not work on the line. Stopping the source is a plumbing trade and it should happen first or at the same time, because cleaning a room while the line is still backing up accomplishes nothing. Call a plumber for the line and us for everything the water touched.
Is a sewage backup covered by my policy?
